I recently enjoyed reading a friend’s letter from her travels while staying in a modest hotel at the base of Prague Castle. She described the stillness of the early evening darkness as Fall shifted quietly into Winter. She went on to share the sweet and simple details of her room—what she called, “Little nothings that make the great everything.”

These were things that cost almost nothing, yet created an environment that communicated care, kindness, beauty, simplicity, and the small pleasures of life. Her story reminded me of how much I once enjoyed a stay in a historic California hotel. Each day, I received a lovely quote, a freshly picked tangerine, or a carefully wrapped candy with a handwritten note expressing gratitude for choosing their hotel. These thoughtful, unadorned gifts became tiny bright surprises at the end of long days spent studying.
Her letter made me reflect on how small an older adult’s world can become, and how essential simple pleasures are to all of us. I thought of a woman confined to her bed and how we plan to add photos and favorite images to her plain walls, reconnect her with her church group, and bring her favorite blanket from home.
Later that day, I crossed the hall and met another woman with a life full of hosting parties and creating extraordinary events, moments that became cherished memories for the people she loved. She thrived on creativity and connection.
After leaving, I realized I had never thought to connect the two of them. Their lives had been temporarily separated from their homes, their collections, and the gardens they once tended. They both longed to return to spaces shaped by their own hands. Yet they might find purpose in connecting with each other, excited to share their interests, or curious to discover new common ground.
The awareness to do better—to create “little nothings that make the great everything” challenged me to lead my team to think differently. It is with gratitude and passion that we serve our clients. Wishing you a blessed Thanksgiving filled with countless “great everythings” shared with the people you love the most.
